The Write Stuff Literary Competitions 2005

Category A The Write Stuff Poetry Competition

This section was for a poem up to 200 lines in length.
The judge for the poetry competition for 2005 was Stephen Edgar, recipient of the inaugural Australian Book Review prize.

WINNERS: POETRY SECTION

  • 1st PRIZE: "Headless Portrait of a Pregnant Woman" by Esther Ottaway (Tasmania)
  • 2nd PRIZE: "To Set Out on a Journey" by Rebecca Edwards (Queensland)
  • Highly commended: "A Van Diemen's Land Inheritance" by Graeme Hetherington (Australian poet now living in the Czech Republic)
    Also highly commended: "Dementia Ward" by Rebecca Edwards (Queensland)

Category B The Write Stuff Short Story Competition

This section was for a short story of 5,000 to 10,000 words (i.e no fewer than 5,000 and no more than 10,000 words). The judge once again is Giles Hugo, journalist, writer and co-editor of The Write Stuff.

WINNERS: SHORT STORY SECTION

  • 1st PRIZE:
    "Saturn Return", by EJ Shu (Victoria)
  • 2nd PRIZE
    "The Automated Man", by Dov Spinks (South Australia)
  • Highly commended:
    Fiji – Jon Easton (New South Wales).
    Alaska and Antarctica – Jessie Borrell (Victoria).
  • Commended:
    The Garden Path – Jennifer Compton (New South Wales).
    Tutti e Tre – Kate Holden (Victoria).
